Keeping all of your important documents in one place \u2014 like a folder \u2014 makes them easy to grab and go in an emergency. Evacuating your home quickly can be extremely stressful, so having your essential documents ready at a moment&#8217;s notice can help make a challenging situation more manageable.<br \/>\n______________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing your ID documents in a disaster like a fire, flood, or hurricane can feel like a massive burden after what can already be an unbearably stressful event. Suddenly, you&#8217;re faced with the daunting task of replacing vital ID documents, which are essential for managing your finances, enrolling in school, dealing with insurance, and in over two-thirds of states: voting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re required to show identification to replace identification, it can feel like you\u2019re caught in a frustrating nightmare. Most replacement documents will be mailed to you, so it\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crucial<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make sure they\u2019re delivered to a valid address!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ompile an inventory of any forms of identification you DO have. Even if they don\u2019t seem useful \u2014 things like letters from government agencies with your name and new address can be helpful! Here\u2019s a quick guide on how to replace a few key documents:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce, Adoption, and Legal Change-of-name Certificates:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a US-born citizen,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/w2w.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the vital records office<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the state where you were born. They should be able to guide you through the process of how to obtain the documents you need, including any required fees or ID. In most states, a lawyer can submit an application for a certified copy of your vital documents for you \u2014 they would just need to submit the request along with a copy of their photo ID.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Social Security Card<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying for a replacement copy of your Social Security card is a good first step if you\u2019ve lost or damaged your driver\u2019s license or state ID. Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need to do:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find your nearest Social Security office <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/locator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Print and fill out the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsecurity.gov\/forms\/ss-5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">downloadable application<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a replacement Social Security card. Be sure to sign the application or it will be denied!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your application, you\u2019ll need to include a complete list of documents (originals or certified copies only) with your application, including proof of age, identity, and US Citizenship. There are many different kinds of documents accepted for each of these categories, but if you don\u2019t have access to any of these documents, call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mail \u2013 or, if any of your records are originals \u2014 take your application and documents to your nearest Social Security office. Keep in mind that it\u2019ll generally take around ten days to receive your Social Security card.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Driver\u2019s License or State ID<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The process for replacing these IDs varies by state, so you\u2019ll need to contact your<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/motor-vehicle-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local DMV office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for specific information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have your driver\u2019s license or non-driver\u2019s state ID along with certified copies of your vital ID documents, you can work on getting the rest of your documentation, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Citizenship papers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Reach out to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Citizenship and Immigration Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you need to replace lost or damaged citizenship papers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Green Card\/Legal Permanent Resident Card<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: File an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/green-card\/after-we-grant-your-green-card\/replace-your-green-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I-90 form online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services if you\u2019ve lost your legal permanent residence documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Financial Records<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Your bank branch or other financial institution(s) can guide you on how to replace lost account information or cards. If you\u2019re unable to contact your bank, you can reach out to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to also contact any credit card companies to alert them of your damaged or lost cards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Property &amp; Deed Documents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 If you\u2019ve lost property deed records, the county recorder\u2019s office where your property is located should be able to help.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>School Records<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Once you have your IDs in hand again, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact the administration offices of your or your children\u2019s schools <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for transcript or records requests.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tax Records<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If your tax records were lost or destroyed, call the IRS Disaster Assistance Hotline at 1-866-562-5227 or visit their website<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also qualify for tax relief as a result of a public emergency.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Military Records<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 To replace your Military ID card(s) or other military records, contact the applicable branch of service or visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/military-records#item-35657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US3.A.gov website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Passport <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 If your passport is among your lost or damaged documents, you should notify the US government. To replace your passport,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/iafdb.travel.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locate a passport facility near you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need your certified birth certificate and other forms of ID to complete the application process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Health Insurance, Medicare\/Medicaid Cards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 For private health insurance, contact your insurance company. If you have Medicare, contact the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/agency\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Security Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
