Mike DeWine to veto a voting measure approved just before lawmakers left for the holidays. The bill,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/136\/sb293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio Senate Bill 293<\/a>, eliminates a grace period for absentee ballots post-marked by Election Day to arrive by mail, which GOP lawmakers have been whittling away in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers also lumped in several provisions targeting noncitizens on the voting rolls. It\u2019s an issue Secretary of State Frank LaRose has repeatedly raised even as he insists on Ohio\u2019s \u201cgold standard\u201d electoral system. [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"editorialSubhed\">The audits<\/h4>\n<p>The organization VoteRiders helps voters get the ID they need to cast a ballot in their state.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s legal director, Ceridwen Cherry, said routinely scouring federal database and Ohio\u2019s Bureau of Motor Vehicles records to \u201croot out suspected noncitizen voters is a solution in search of a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Information in the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database isn\u2019t always up to date, she explained.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also no state or federal law requiring naturalized citizens to update their driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n<p>That means a new citizen could register to vote, and one or both of the databases LaRose uses to review their registration might wrongly indicate that they\u2019re ineligible.<\/p>\n<p>And Cherry worries the bill \u201cdoes not give incorrectly flagged eligible US citizens a chance to prove their citizenship. Instead, they would be purged from voter rolls without warning or recourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VoteRiders worked with the University of Maryland\u2019s Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement to study Americans\u2019 access to documentary proof of citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>They found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Voter-ID-survey-Key-Results-June-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 21 million Americans<\/a>, or more than 9% of the voting age population, do not have ready access to the documents they need.<\/p>\n<p>Cherry warns those two factors together \u2014 lack of warning and lack of access \u2014 could lead to otherwise eligible voters being disenfranchised because they don\u2019t have what they need and don\u2019t have time to get it.
