\u201cIt’s impossible to separate voting rights and trans rights.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Restrictive identification requirements and voter ID laws can make it difficult for youth in the United States who identify within the Two Spirit, transgender, and gender-nonconforming (2STGNC<\/a>) umbrella to cast a ballot. Ahead of the 2024 general election, a few voter ID groups are determined to ensure these young people are not\u00a0disenfranchised<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Transgender rights<\/a>\u00a0continue to be at the center of political attacks, as mainstream media outlets\u00a0normalize anti-trans rhetoric<\/a>\u00a0and legislatures across the country\u00a0file a mounting number<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0anti-trans bills<\/a>\u00a0each year. That\u2019s why advocates are stressing the importance of demarginalizing trans and gender-nonconforming people\u2019s access to vote.<\/p>\n

Teen Vogue<\/em>\u00a0previously\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0on pre-election polling from digital health care service Folx Health that found \u201cthe top three issues in order for the trans adults surveyed were LGBTQ+ issues, including health care access; threats to democracy; and the war on Gaza.\u201d Per the survey, 90% of trans people are registered voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s impossible to separate voting rights and trans rights when we’re thinking about the experience of the trans community at the ballot box this fall,\u201d\u00a0VoteRiders<\/a>\u00a0executive director Lauren Kunis tells\u00a0Teen Vogue.<\/em>\u00a0The national voting rights organization is partnered with\u00a0HeadCount<\/a>\u00a0to get more LGBTQ+ young people the correct identification they need to register to vote.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0HeadCount<\/a>, 27 states have strict identification rules that slow down the process for trans and gender-nonconforming people to change their legal name or update their gender marker on key documents such as driver\u2019s licenses and\u00a0birth certificates<\/a>.\u00a0VoteRiders<\/a>\u00a0also lists more than 35 states that have voter ID laws, meaning people must present a form of ID the government accepts to confirm their identity before participating in elections. Eighteen of those states have enacted stricter policies since 2020, when the movement to\u00a0vote by mail or absentee ballot<\/a>\u00a0peaked during the onset of the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n
