{"id":18085,"date":"2023-10-17T13:56:39","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T13:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/?p=18085"},"modified":"2023-10-17T13:56:39","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T13:56:39","slug":"daily-kos-fighting-voter-disenfranchisement-one-id-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/daily-kos-fighting-voter-disenfranchisement-one-id-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Kos: Fighting Voter Disenfranchisement One ID at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BY KATHLEEN UNGER, FOUNDER, CHAIR OF THE BOARD &amp; PRESIDENT, VOTERIDERS \u2014 OCTOBER 13, 2023<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the North Carolina Supreme Court reinstated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/states\/north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restrictive voter ID law<\/a> that had previously been deemed unconstitutional due to racial bias. This requirement will impact all voters, but especially low-income voters, young voters, and Black voters. As is now the case in 38 (\u2026and counting for 2024) states, North Carolina voters are faced with a limited list of acceptable forms of ID in order to vote.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18086 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ap-voting-5_08122022-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Fighting Voter Disenfranchisement One ID at a Time\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ap-voting-5_08122022-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ap-voting-5_08122022-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ap-voting-5_08122022.jpg 915w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For voters in many of these states, voter registration is not enough. They often must also produce the required ID when they vote. These voter ID laws are a not-so-subtle form of voter disenfranchisement.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of voting-age Americans lack a current government-issued photo ID. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/analysis-millions-lack-voter-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdce.umd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UMD\u2019s Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement<\/a>\u00a0(CDCE) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/voteriders.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VoteRiders<\/a>\u00a0found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly\u00a0<strong>29 million<\/strong>\u00a0voting-age U.S. citizens lacked a valid driver\u2019s license and over\u00a0<strong>7 million<\/strong>\u00a0had no other form of non-expired government-issued photo identification.<\/li>\n<li>An estimated\u00a0<strong>1.86 million<\/strong>\u00a0Black non-Hispanic Americans (6.2%) and\u00a0<strong>1.86 million<\/strong>\u00a0Hispanic Americans (6.1%) lack a photo ID, compared to just 2.3% of White non-Hispanic Americans.<\/li>\n<li>Adult Americans who were not registered to vote were three times more likely to lack a driver\u2019s license (30%) than those who were registered (11%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How do we fight back against this barrier to the ballot?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/team\/kathleen-unger-esq\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kathleen Unger<\/a> founded VoteRiders in 2012 to ensure that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/about\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no eligible voter is prevented from casting a ballot that counts due to voter ID laws<\/a>, either directly from lack of acceptable ID or indirectly because of voter confusion. Back in 2012, we had no idea how urgent this mission would become.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of our 11-year history, with over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/volunteer\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10,000 volunteers<\/a> and almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/partners\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,400 partner organizations<\/a>, VoteRiders has reached millions of voters nationwide with trusted information about voter ID rules where they live. VoteRiders has worked with tens of thousands of voters one-on-one (sometimes for months at a time!) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/freehelp\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to make sure they have an ID<\/a> and helped millions more to make sure they have what they need to vote with confidence.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, during the 2022 midterms, we reached out to 15,500 voters in Texas whose ballots were rejected due to a new voter ID law that went into effect a few months earlier.
