VoteRiders is honored to continue their fight by ensuring every eligible voter has the freedom to cast a ballot and make their voices heard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15406 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"VoteRiders Celebrates Diane Nash 85th Birthday\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nash was among the most influential advocates for desegregation and voting rights during the Civil Rights Movement. She co-founded the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/diane-nash-presidential-medal-freedom-civil-rights-180980380\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drove efforts to integrate lunch counters in Nashville, and led the historic Freedom Rides of 1961 which ended <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">segregation on public transportation throughout the Southern United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was as a college student at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/diane-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diane Nash first experienced living under Jim Crow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and came face-to-face with overt discrimination and racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cThere were signs that said white, white-only, colored. [The] library was segregated, the public library, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/diane-nash-freedom-rider-civil-rights-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>she recalled<\/b><\/a><b>. \u201cParks, swimming pools, hotels, motels. I was at a period where I was interested in expanding: going to new places, seeing new things, meeting new people. So that felt very confined and uncomfortable.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sick of being treated like a second class citizen, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nash began attending <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/diane-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonviolent protest workshops in 1959<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and soon became a leader in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/snccdigital.org\/inside-sncc\/establishing-sncc\/campus-affiliates\/nashville-student-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nashville Student Central Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where she organized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/diane-nash-freedom-rider-civil-rights-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lunch counter sit-ins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first civil rights demonstration to successfully desegregate lunch counters in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when faced with violence and threats, Nash was adamant that the fight for freedom was too important to stop challenging the status quo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When violence halted the first Freedom Ride to Alabama, Nash put herself on the front line and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued to lead her fellow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/diane-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom Riders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Birmingham, Alabama to Jacksonville Mississippi to fight for desegregation of public transportation in the South.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cWe recognized that if the Freedom Ride ended right then after all that violence, southern white racists would think that they could stop a project by inflicting enough violence on it,\u201d <\/b><b>she said in<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/activists\/diane-nash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> the 2010 documentary <\/b><b><i>Freedom Riders<\/i><\/b><\/a><b>.\u201c<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 22, 1961, racial segregation on interstate buses throughout the Southern United States was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/freedom-riders-freedom-travel\/#:~:text=On%20September%2022%2C%201961%2C%20after,bus%20terminals%20by%20November%201.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finally outlawed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After demonstrating fierce leadership and bravery during the Freedom Rides, Nash had impressed her fellow community of civil rights activists and was elected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/encyclopedia\/nash-diane-judith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SNCC) where she led direct action campaigns in the summer of 1961. In 1962, Nash left college and the SNCC and became a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/encyclopedia\/nash-diane-judith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field organizer at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Christian Leadership Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SCLC) where she registered people to vote, advocated for desegregation in schools, and worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King. Nash was arrested on several accounts for her activism, even <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/diane-nash-freedom-rider-civil-rights-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant with her first child<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15408 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"VoteRiders Celebrates Diane Nash 85th Birthday\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later, in 1963, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nash joined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/diane-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCLC\u2019s Selma Voting Rights Movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and spearheaded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/diane-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Selma to Montgomery marches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1965<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which led to the passage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/diane-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Voting Rights Act of 1965<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and outlawed the discriminatory voting practices used in many Southern states. She also joined a committee that spurred the passage of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/activists\/diane-nash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil Rights Act in 1964<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prohibiting discrimination in the workplace based on race, color, religion, sex, and nationality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Civil Rights Movement came to an end in 1968, Nash moved back to her original home of Chicago where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/encyclopedia\/nash-diane-judith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she worked as a public school teacher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, started practicing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/activists\/diane-nash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-estate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/diane-nash-presidential-medal-freedom-civil-rights-180980380\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">housing and anti-war advocate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
