For this reason, the Peach State has been a priority for VoteRiders the entire year and for many years before that. And ahead of this week\u2019s U.S. Senate runoff election, we redoubled our efforts to make sure every eligible voter was able to participate and make their voices heard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13397\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13397\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13397 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_1804-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Emory University students \" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_1804-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_1804-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_1804-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_1804.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emory University students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right after Election Day, VoteRiders deployed additional staff from across the country to Georgia to double the size of our organizing team there. By mid-November, our staff were fanned out across the state in the major urban centers of Atlanta, Columbus and Savannah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia\u2019s voter ID law is particularly challenging for students, as the state is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/student\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of thirteen states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that only accept SOME students ID for voting. In Georgia, student IDs from public colleges and universities are accepted for voting, but those from private institutions, including several of the state&#8217;s large HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) are not. As a result, student voters and young student voters of color in particular are disproportionately impacted by voter ID laws in terms of direct disenfranchisement and confusion alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons, VoteRiders\u2019 field programs and events ahead of the runoff focused largely on private universities such as Emory, as well as large HBCUs like Morehouse and Spelman. Working alongside student voting champions such as Campus Vote Project and Emory Votes, we helped ensure student voters had what they needed to vote with confidence. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/nbc-news-hbcu-students-in-georgia-face-voter-id-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBCNews.com featured VoteRiders\u2019 efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to educate and assist student voters at HBCUs for a story on the disparate impact of voter ID laws on Black voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the campus community, VoteRiders staff joined several stops on the Black Voters Matter \u201cCollard Green Caucus\u201d tour to offer communities food giveaways before Thanksgiving while also serving up crucial voting information just in time for the runoff. Our organizers in Atlanta, Columbus, and Savannah <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NicholasMRamos\/status\/1599550596734148608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also swung by the \u201cOn the Runoff\u201d tour <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hosted by our friends at the ACLU of Georgia, Black Voters Matter, When We All Vote, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13413\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13413 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221122_120747-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"VoteRiders and Black Voters Matter\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221122_120747-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221122_120747-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221122_120747-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221122_120747.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VoteRiders and Black Voters Matter ready to offer critical voting info<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our on-the-ground staff were supported by the efforts of hundreds of virtual volunteers who joined in from elsewhere across the country to get out the vote in Georgia. Before the dust had settled on the midterm elections on November 8, we re-activated our year-long letter-writing campaign to the 157,000+ registered voters without an ID on file, including a joint event with Fair Count. Later in the month, we organized a virtual text-banking session co-hosted by actor Piper Perabo and the CAA Foundation that sent more than 1.2 million text messages to youth of color between November 29 and Election Day on December 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13404\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13404 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Piper1-1-300x164.png\" alt=\"Piper Perabo at our virtual textbank\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Piper1-1-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Piper1-1-1024x561.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Piper1-1-768x421.png 768w, https:\/\/www.voteriders.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Piper1-1.png 1122w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Piper Perabo at our virtual textbank<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our work aims to reach voters wherever they are, and for many voters, that\u2019s online. VoteRiders ran targeted digital campaigns on Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok to ensure Georgia youth and student voters knew their options for voter ID. We also had radio ads up in Columbus, Macon, and Savannah to expand our reach, building upon digital billboards placed earlier in the cycle in places like bus stations and other public gathering places.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, 3.53 million Georgians voted in the runoff.
